Whispers from the Fairy garden of Villa Olivia
Among cacti, streams, and a stone butterfly
There is something captivating about the way waters flows gently across rocks.
It brings life wherever it touches – plants, flowers, insects – and small creatures quietly gather around it.
That’s why, when we decided to revive our “cactus garden”, we came up with a slightly unusual idea: to create an oasis in the desert.
After months of digging and studying how to build a small self-sufficient ecosystem, the pond was born.
oxygenating plants rest on its bottom, aquatic mint and horsetail grow along the edges, and soon the first bright yellow waterlilies will open like sunbursts on the surface.
But the true enchantment comes from the goldfish.
THey now recognize me and swim over, waiting for their food.
A terracotta jar, once used to make homemade vinegar- the kind where the ” mother” would float gently in the wine- now pours water into the pond along a quiet path.
A timer keeps the rhyth, creating a soothing trickle that offers water to birds and dragonflies alike.
Standing guard over the stream is the hollow trunk of a dragon tree, where- since this spring- tiny doors and windows have been lovingly carved into the bark, connected by small wooden stairs and railings, built by skilled hands.
And from above- especially from our garden and sea-view rooms – a butterfly shape slowly reveals itself:
the jar is the head,
the body, the stream that flows into the pond.
The wings open in mirrored cactibeds, traced with pumice stone, brown gravel and white pebbles.
It’s a sign.
An invitation to look more closely.
Because here, even among the thorns, life always finds a way to bloom.
