A few days ago, a young Spanish guest returned to Villa Olivia Residence for another stay.
She had already experienced one of our sea-view studios and chose to come back once again. For us, returning guests are always a special gift. It means that a place has become a memory worth reliving.
One evening, just before sunset, I invited her to visit Le Dimore, the home where I live and the place that best reflects my idea of Mediterranean living.
The house stands on a gentle hillside overlooking the sea. From here, the view stretches across the bay of Forio, from the harbour to the headland of San Francesco, where white houses, gardens and the blue horizon blend into one peaceful landscape.
Yet the experience begins long before reaching the terrace.
Along the stone steps, lavender was in full bloom, releasing its richest fragrance into the warm evening air. Nearby, the white flowers of the datura were opening quietly, while mint, thyme and lemon grass filled the garden with fresh Mediterranean scents.
After the plants had been watered, every step seemed to carry a different aroma.
Walking up those stairs became a sensory journey: the scent of damp earth, the gentle breeze moving through the leaves, the distant sound of cicadas and, little by little, the sea appearing in front of us.
Then, suddenly, the view opened.
The sun was still above the horizon but already moving towards sunset, covering Forio with a warm golden light. The harbour, the rooftops and the sea seemed to slow down together.
For a few moments, we simply stood there in silence.
And it reminded me that the true spirit of the Mediterranean is not about rushing from one place to another. It is about taking time to breathe, to notice a fragrance carried by the wind, to watch the changing colours of the sky and to enjoy the beauty of an ordinary evening.
A few days later, she told me that this simple walk would be one of the memories she would take home from Ischia.
Perhaps the most beautiful journeys are not always the ones captured in photographs.
Sometimes they remain in the air, like the scent of lavender at sunset.
